AFL Cairns have announce the dates of March the 7th & 14th for the 2009 XXXX cup pre-season competition.
Whilst April the 4th has been set for the seasons first fixtured home & away game.
Steve Daniel or SJ as we all know him, South Cairns Cutters & Queensland Country coach headed to an AFL Queensland function in Brisbane last weekend believing he was heading down to talk about his side’s historic promotion to division one at the Australian Country Football Championships earlier this year.
Little did he know he was about to receive the honour of being named AFL Queensland Coach of the Year.
SJ, who coaches the Cutters in the AFL Cairns competition, said he had no idea he was even in the running for the award.
"It was a great feeling to receive such an honour, but a lot of people contributed to what we were able to achieve at the championships."
SJ will continue to coach the Cutters in 2009 chasing the elusive AFL Cairns premiership.
With memories of the defeat still stinging, Steve said he owed it to himself and his players to give a premiership in Cairns another try.
SJ Named AFL QLD Coach Of The Year
Pre season training will start on Wednesday December the 3rd, and every Monday & Wednesday up to & including December 17th
Hayden Foss has been appointed 2009 fitness advisor, and will take you through your paces in town. Meeting point the Lagoon. See SJ for more details.
Two notable losses for the 2009 season, Steve Shaw & Jace Kelly.
SJ says that recruiting is going well, SJ being SJ is not willing to give away to many secrets at the moment.
Training camp date to be announced, sometime in March.
Kim's New Flag
Kim's love for the club is unquestionable. The big fella likes to organise & collect anything Green, White & Red, from bar mats to leather jackets with the Cutters logo on it.
This year he's gone one better and has organised himself a Cutter flag. In 2009 keep your eye on the flag pole on match days, you may just see it flying proudly over Fretwell Park.
