Grand Final days are not for the faint hearted; Saturday’s game against Cairns Saints proved to be one of those cases. The game started at break neck speed. The ball was to be kicked many times up and down the field with rapid fire, in on one side out the other, no sooner had it come in one teams territory then the defense pounced and moved it out as quick as it came in, Motor was flattened in front of the umpires, then Steve Davis received one for his efforts, these lads were in it for keeps. Saints were getting good ball as usual to Eagle and Walsh with Cam Campbell and Mick Markham trying their best to nullify them.
Not long after the break and resumption Whits got blindsided and was required to be carted off to hospital. Steve Davies scored South’s 1st goal in the second quarter at the 4 min mark followed not long after by Bill English. Saints started their onslaught again and were starting to take control of this game. Souths lads did all they could to keep it going, but with another canning from the umpires found things hard going, not to mention Whits off the field and as we found out later Motor broke his hand this time. Not making excuses Saints were good on the day and unfortunately only one team could emerge victorious from the day. South’s had many strong and gallant players who did not know the word surrender , in the final term the lads had a better run of things and started a small come back ,as the game was gone it made small difference .
